PART TwoFixing the Chaos Factory

So far in Trampled by Unicorns I have been delving into the myriad malign effects of Big Tech on users and the wider world, as well as investigating some of the complex reasons that lie behind the turmoil. In Part II, I will offer solutions for each stakeholder, from industry players such as founders and CEOs, to investors, boards, and the public markets, to government and regulators, the media and private individuals. But first a few caveats.

None of these solutions is a universal remedy, nor will any of them work on their own. Most of them require further development before they're properly implemented—with Big Tech, the devil is forever in the details.

Some of my suggestions are already being discussed. It is my hope that by the time you read this, some of what I advocate, particularly in those areas where momentum already exists (e.g., tackling tax minimization), will have been implemented or will at least be well under way. That would be good news because there is little time to waste. COVID-19, which hit the world just as I was putting the finishing touches on this book, will also likely have a major impact on the tech industry's future and modus operandi; indeed, it already has.

It is important to note also that there are some leaders, across all industry stakeholders, working actively to put humans back at the heart of tech, by making decisions that are painful in the short term, yet will pay dividends further down the line for citizens ...
