Fundamental Concepts: Motors

When Alessandro Volta discovered the principles of the electric battery in the early 1800s, he opened the way for expanding experimentation in electricity.

Volta noticed that while cutting up a frog, the frog twitched each time he entered the abdominal cavity with two dissimilar metal instruments. The frog’s fluids acted as an electrolyte, and electrons were transferred from one piece of metal to the other.

The battery provided a reliable source of electrical power. Up to this time only static charges were available for making scientific inquiry into the nature of electricity. Appropriately, the unit of electrical potential energy is called the volt.
