Urban transport in the 21st century is provided using technologies that developed in the 19th century – cars, bicycles, buses, electric trains and trams – and walking, which has been around for much longer. Some transport planners find this frustrating. Why should travellers in the age of the i-phone use vehicles that haven’t substantially changed since the days of the Edison phonograph?
