6.1 CALIBRATION VERSUS VALIDATION

Model calibration is a general term for estimating or adjusting model parameters to improve its practicality and predictability. Model calibration includes a range of techniques, some standard and some creative, to accurately reproduce observed or actual values. Model validation predicts the values of interest that are already known for another time period (e.g., another year) or another similar location (e.g., a comparable corridor) using the calibrated model.
