is a commodity service delivered with a difference that my friend values—and
for which he pays extra.
Face-to-Face
In many respects, what goes on in today’s commercial world can be categorized
as either transactions or relationships. For example, I can now handle most of
my personal financial needs without ever speaking to another human being.
Thanks to the Internet and the phone system, I can buy and sell stock, obtain
an extension on my bank line of credit, seek out and get an auto loan at the
lowest rate, and purchase a bank CD for my IRA. Each of these transactions
is low-cost and efficient.
On the other hand, I can do all of these things and more at my local bank,
where a person I’ve known for a number of years listens to me, understands
how my personal and business finances relate to each other, and occasionally
suggests alternatives to my current approach to handling them. My banker is
also a source of useful information about potential suppliers and others who
might be able to help me: patent attorneys, tax specialists, and so forth. I value
this type of relationship banking, and so do millions of other people, even
though it takes more time and costs a bit extra.
