Collaboration and the power of the crowd

In January 2013, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam took the stage at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to herald his company’s bold, new sustainability initiative: a multi-year innovation project called Powerful Answers.

The project was created to raise awareness for the wireless network’s new 4G service and its centrepiece was a $10 million crowdsourced challenge for entrepreneurs, individuals and companies to generate new ideas in the health care, education and sustainability sectors. “We know that to move this industry forward, the whole ecosystem needs to be involved in the innovation process,” explained McAdam.1
