Chapter 15 exercise c: headline
The Headline exercise is an ambition workout. It helps unlock the combined potential of you and all the talented people in your organisation. At the end of the day that’s what a True Purpose really is: a way to surface the truth about what you and your team are capable of and then point it at an end benefit bigger than yourselves.
This exercise works exactly the same way if you’re a startup with just you and a partner. If your True Purpose is as good as you think it is (and it almost always is), you’ll eventually have a team of people around you. A team of people electrified around your idea; a team of people with talent and drive and determination and resilience — the qualities of a rebel army going up against an incumbent government. So all you have to do is ask yourself, ‘What is this team of incredible humans capable of?’
This exercise starts to unlock those things. It plays with the question, ‘What is possible if the hunches I have about the power of my True Purpose to genuinely help people are true?’
For this exercise to work fully, you have to free yourself from the constraints that may be clouding your mind right now. Y’know, all those day-to-day things that keep business owners up at night: income streams, profit margins, employment issues, aggressive competitors, and so on.
