China’s large and growing population and rapid industrialization have come with a huge ecological cost that is often described as a debt ‘borrowed’ from nature. This chapter highlights China’s current environmental challenges in terms of water, air and soil pollution, energy demand and utilization, and nature conservation. Governmental efforts towards environmentally sustainable development and its effectiveness are evaluated and several institutional defects in China’s environmental protection system are discussed.
