Anti-poverty campaign – the struggle between equality and efficiency


China’s remarkable economic achievements since the reforms have been accompanied by an ever-widening income gap between the urban and rural, the coastal and interior regions, and the rich and poor. China’s poverty issue goes hand in hand with income disparity which has its deep roots in the country’s inequitable wealth distribution system. This chapter first analyzes a variety of factors that could explain the inequality and poverty in the country and the dynamics of these factors.
