8.1 Introduction

Laser systems have been applied in medicine since they first became available, and today they are employed in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Dye lasers, in particular, have potential advantages over other lasers as medical instruments.

A dye laser consists of an organic dye solution optically pumped by a light source (flashlamp, pulsed or continuous-wave [CW] laser). The type of output desired and the absorption properties of the dye determine the choice of the pump source.
