Taxonomies are essential parts of our language. Strictly speaking, taxonomies come from language itself. But where do we find the taxonomies that we need for successful textual analytics?

There are two basic sources of taxonomies that are useful for textual analytics:

  • Prefabricated, curated taxonomies prepared by a taxonomy vendor
  • Handmade, manually-prepared taxonomies

Curated Taxonomies

There is a very strong case to be made for prefabricated, curated taxonomies. The basis for prefabricated, curated taxonomies stems from the fact that, for the most part, the taxonomies for one organization are going to be very, very similar to the taxonomies for another company in the same line of business.
