The figure on the cover of Tuscany SCA in Action is captioned “Berger Des Garrigues,” indicating a shepherd from the southern regions of France around the Mediterranean Basin. Garrigue is a type of low, soft-leaved scrubland typically found in Mediterranean forests and woodlands in France and Spain, and often composed of kermes oak, lavender, and thyme. The illustration is taken from a nineteenth-century edition of Sylvain Maréchal’s four-volume compendium of regional dress customs published in France.
