System science gives us a very useful definition of a business enterprise. The definition: A business is a viable, very complex, purposeful, probabilistic system. Each of these words has a specific meaning:
- A business. The total company and each business unit within the company is a business.

- Very complex. So complex everyone must be involved in some aspect of control.
