The testing pyramid – what to test?

The testing pyramid is a tool to guide us through what kinds of tests can be written and at what levels. Tests at the top of the pyramid indicate fewer tests are needed, whereas more testing is required at the bottom of the pyramid. It illustrates what we should aim for and is shown in the following diagram:
