The CD included with this book, the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS Desktop CD, is an example of a Live CD, which is a bootable CD that provides a great way to experiment with a preconfigured Ubuntu installation without actually modifying your hard drive or going through the installation process. You can use live CDs as a portable Ubuntu installation that you can take with you, temporarily converting other computer systems to Ubuntu Linux systems regardless of whether the machine is currently running Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, or another Linux distribution. Ubuntu also offers an impressive Live CD Persistence function that enables you to save work and system configuration done using the Desktop CD to removable media that you can reuse the next time you boot the Live CD. In most cases, you can also mount and access your existing disk partitions after booting from the Ubuntu Desktop CD, so that you can even do real work with Ubuntu and save it to the partitions used by your other operating system.
