People often tell themselves not to get upset, not to get angry, not to worry. We think and give ourselves instructions using language; some people talk out loud to themselves while others only do this when no one’s around.
However, the best of intentions sometimes receive the complete opposite response. Have you ever said to someone or had someone say to you, “Don’t get angry about what I’m going to tell you...” and then you proceed to get angry? The reason is quite simple: you have been primed to do exactly what the speaker doesn’t want you to.
