Chapter 5: The body language of anxiety

We all have it

Everyone at some time in their life experiences anxiety, and it has many behavioural, cognitive and emotional components. In this chapter we shall concentrate on the somatic elements or the way in which our bodies manifest stress. Anxiety, unless it is a clinical condition, is usually brought on by something specific, which is most often one of four reasons:

  1. A current event for which your resources are inadequate.
  2. A significant future event not experienced before.
  3. A previous experience which was painful and closure has not occurred.
  4. A future event which was painful the last time it was experienced.
