7 HOW DO WE IMPROVE EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT FOR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE?

DOI: 10.4324/9781003171133-10

Ulrich and Lake (1991) proposed “building better products or services, pricing goods or services lower than the competition, or incorporating technological innovations into research and manufacturing operations must today be supplemented by organizational capability – the firm’s ability to manage people to gain competitive advantage” (p. 77). One can think of competitive advantage as the “ability to generate above normal returns relative to competitors” and the “social version of survival of the fittest” (Ployhart, 2012, p. 62). Although Ulrich and Lake’s article may be considered a bit outdated today, their supposition remains valid.
