7  LED Replacements for Incandescent and Linear-Tubular Fluorescent Lamps

7.1  Introduction

The two most widely used and recognized lamps are still the household incandescent and the linear-tubular fluorescent lamps, which are often called the Edison lamp or bulb and the linear fluorescent lamp (LFL), respectively, in the United States. As discussed in Chapter 5, many countries are trying to make the Edison bulb obsolete for most applications in order to reduce energy consumption. While fluorescent technologies currently provide substantial energy savings over the incandescent counterparts for residential and commercial lighting uses, LED replacement lamps are increasingly viewed as practical contenders for the next generation.
