CHAPTER 3
The Art, Craft, and Science of Organizing
Much that is consequential in organizations, including how decisions are made, how strategies form, and what managers do, can be described at the interface of art, craft, and science. Art is based on insight, vision, intuition, and is idea-based. Craft is practical, realistic, engaging, and experience-based, while science is inclined to be more factual and analytical, evidence-based. You might wish to consider yourself in these terms before we discuss their use in decision making, strategy formation, and managerial work (see box).
