Orchestrating the Transformation to Unfear
When a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, it undergoes a complicated process. After fattening itself up for several weeks, the caterpillar stops eating, hangs upside down from a twig or a leaf, and spins itself a silky cocoon and molts into a shiny chrysalis. Inside, the caterpillar digests itself by releasing enzymes that dissolve all its tissue. All that remains is a sort of “caterpillar soup.” Yet certain highly organized groups of cells survive this process and float in the soup. These groups of cells—called imaginal discs—are what will eventually become the wings, the eyes, the legs, and all the other parts of the butterfly. There is a disc for each of these parts.
