Work and Family

The research and consulting organization where I spend most of my career was a division of an organization whose core business is employer-sponsored child care. I’ve spoken with thousands of employees about how they manage career and home, as well as to their organizational leaders about how they saw their responsibilities as an employer. The degree of variance among organizations was astounding. Industry, region, and organizational history all played a role, as did whether the CEO had children and grandchildren, and what kind of role they played in their own family life.

I met women in leadership who had stay-at-home husbands and hired help and said “I don’t see what the big deal is, I did it, so can other women.” ...
