Great Toque Outdoors has a fixed schedule for hardware expenditure as its
database grows. The increased compression ratios that adaptive compression
yields lead directly to lowered storage costs, because its database requires less
space. The result is less frequent hardware expenditure for storage.
Adaptive compression can also improve query performance, especially for
applications that are I/O-bound (in contrast to processor-bound). An example of
such data is likely found in a data warehouse, where decision-support workloads
are composed of complex analytic queries that perform massive aggregations.
