MISGUIDED STRATEGIES

WHEN WE look at how situations involving different groups are actually handled by communities and nations, corporations and congregations, we see many vestiges of the us-versus-them assumptions and misinterpretations discussed in chapter 3 and too little, if any, recognition of the presence or possibilities of allophilia—of “us plus them.” In this chapter, I will show what is missing from a number of the strategies and approaches most commonly used to solve us-versus-them conflict and more generally to bring “us and them” together more productively.
