WE HAVE seen throughout this book how us-and-them leadership requires allophilia. In this chapter, I want to emphasize how allophilia requires a particular kind of us-and-them leadership. Leaders—be they formal authority figures charged with leading, or everyday people stepping up to lead from below—must lead toward allophilia, not only away from hate. They must do so by taking bold steps, moving beyond the roster of common us-and-them leadership approaches based on small, iterative, tit-for-tat steps.
