Use Tableau Field Menus to Enable and Disable Subtotals

You’re working with your company’s data and have split it out into a beautiful crosstab that is easy to use and navigate. It is divided into many levels via dimensions and provides information across many products. Your boss is ecstatic, but asks for one last change on your chart: “Can you please add subtotals based on the regions, so I can see them quickly?” You dive back into your workbook. You navigate to the Analysis menu. You find and click on Subtotals. The subtotals appear for every region, but unfortunately, they appear for every other dimension as well. How can you get Tableau to show subtotals for regions and not the other dimensions in your crosstab?

Let’s build a quick example using the built-in Superstore dataset:

  1. Drag Region to Rows, followed by Category and Sub-Category.

  2. Drag Order Date to Columns (it should default to YEAR).

  3. Drag Sales to Text (it should default to SUM).

  4. Next, we’ll enable subtotals by going to the Analysis menu, selecting Totals, and then choosing Add All Subtotals.
