5. Paragraph Formatting

Paragraphs are the true building blocks of any document. Clean, consistent paragraph formatting ultimately determines your document’s readability.

As you learned in Chapter 2, “Editing Documents,” (unless you haven’t read that chapter yet, which is fine), a paragraph is any amount of text followed by a paragraph return. A paragraph return (also called a hard return or a paragraph mark) is a special character that looks like this: ¶
