At the height of the dot.com boom around the beginning of 2000, confidence in e-business fuelled the growth of numerous start-up firms, all claiming to offer customers a unique value proposition in this emerging and exciting market. Governments across the globe were spearheading programmes on e-business. In the UK, the government developed the role of the ‘E-Envoy’. The European Union also set an extensive programme to fund e-business (‘E-Society’) research. Similar programmes appeared in the US, Australia, and Asia.
