Vegas was one of the early multitrack editors available for the PC before the advent of Vegas Video 2.0. Once Vegas set the standard for audio on the PC with Sound Forge several years previously, a multitrack tool was a logical step, and like Forge, it became a standard for the Windows environment.

Vegas can be used for a basic voice-over-only setup or as the heart of a full-blown multitrack studio setup for recording live bands, film scoring, television production work, or other professional audio work.
