Sometime after the due diligence is completed and the visit to the business is past, the venture capitalist’s lawyer will contact you about “the closing.” This term means completing the legal documents for the investment and dispersing the money to your company. You may even hear from the lawyer before the due diligence is completed. This will be your first exposure to the lawyer who is looking out for the interest of the venture capitalist. It is important that you have a lawyer of your own to look after your interests. Never sign legal documents without having an independent lawyer who represents you read them with your interest in mind.
