Chapter 10 The Moore State Machine

A Moore state machine is one in which the outputs are determined by the current state of the device. Each state in the state machine corresponds to a specific value for each output. This type of state machine is in contrast to the Mealy state machine, in which each value of an output is associated with a state transition. In other words, in a Moore machine the value of each output depends on the current state and the current values of the inputs. Although either method, Moore or Mealy, can be used to describe any state machine, each has its own advantages. Essentially, the specific requirements of your state machine will determine which method is optimal for your design.
