The Linear Feedback Shift Register (LFSR) is an extremely useful function that, I believe, would be used even more often if there were more good references showing how to design one. Most textbooks that cover LFSRs, and there aren’t many of them that I’ve been able to find, discuss the mathematical theory of primitive polynomials. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help an electrical engineer design one from flip-flops and combinatorial logic. There is one book, Designus Maximus Unleashed! by Clive “Max” Maxfield who writes for EDN magazine.
