In a darkened room … there is only flickering imagery on the screen … and you, the viewer, in rapt attention.

If the director, actors, photographer, and editor have done their jobs, you have become one with the movie. Then something surreal may happen, something so fantastic or absurd by real-world standards, that you have no doubt of its validity in the seamless context of the movie, because it could only happen there.
