Calculating shots

A lot of directors and camera operators prefer to work empirically. Knowing the focal length of the lens and the camera distance, they can make a shrewd guess whether they will be able to get the sort of shot they want from a particular viewpoint. A director who wants to check out potential shots during pre-studio rehearsals, will often look at the action through a small adjustable viewfinder, which shows the shot-sizes that different lens angles will give.
