You can see inappropriate shots of one kind or another every day on your home TV. Even professionals aren’t infallible! Shots can be inappropriate in several ways:
• Unclear subject – The camera may not be showing the subject clearly; the shot is too distant, too close, at the wrong angle. (For example, a cook is pointing out detail – but the director takes a long shot!)
• Unseen subject – The shot does not show us what a person is speaking about. (A speaker refers to details in a book illustration – which is not shown by the camera.)
• Poor composition – The shot directs attention to the wrong subject.
• Inept – The shot may be overdramatic, or miss visual opportunities.
