Chapter 8. Integrating Multiple Bit Rates
Most Web video formats, including Microsoft Windows Media and Real Video, have the capability to include multiple data rates, or multiple bit rates (MBRs), for audio and video tracks within a single file. Although Flash-compatible video does not offer this feature, you can create the same user experience with little effort. In this chapter, I use ActionScript code and a SMIL file to enable multiple bit rates. SMIL, which stands for Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language, is a Web standard proposed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and most popularly used by Real Player and QuickTime Player.
