12Planning the Session

Once you have worked through all the points of the Design Star, you are ready to move to the next steps of the planning process. In this chapter we'll provide you with an overview of how to work your way through the Design Star and explore the next steps – setting the agenda, creating a playbook and the materials for your session.

Using the Design Star in practice

The work with the Design Star can be an individual task but we encourage you to do it together with the planning team and/or your ‘customer’ since it creates clarity and sets the direction for the following design work.

How-to guide: The Design Star

1. Use a Miro board of the Design Star or draw the star on a flipchart/A3 print of the template depending on the setting for your working session. For each of the following steps one or more members of the group take notes in Miro or notes on Post-its and place them according to what's being discussed.
2. Start with the centre of the star: The purpose
   1. Question ‘upwards’ to define the purpose: ‘What is the objective of this session?’, ‘What is the session meant to contribute to?’, ‘Why are we having the session?’, ‘When we have succeeded with a great session what have we achieved?’.
   2. Question ‘downwards’ to define the deliverables: ‘What should we have when the session is finished?’ ‘What should we have produced?’.
