Chapter 2 Bukhara

Context

Bukhara is an ancient city with major significant monuments and with Central Asia's only inhabited, intact historic core. Its significance was recognized in 1993 when the whole of the Old City was designated as a World Heritage Site. With neighbouring cities of Samarkand and Khiva it forms part of an Uzbekistan heritage tourism ‘milk run’. It also has a central position on the ancient Silk Road which linked China with Europe. During the seventy years in which it was a Republic of the Soviet Union tourism to Uzbekistan developed as part of a centrally planned, command economy.
