Isosurfaces and Level-Sets
ROSS T. WHITAKER, School of Computing, University of Utah
6.1 Introduction
This chapter describes the basic differential geometry of isosurfaces and the method of manipulating the shapes of isosurfaces within volumes, called level-sets. Deformable isosurfaces, implemented with level-set methods, have demonstrated a great potential in visualization for applications such as segmentation, surface processing, and surface reconstruction. This chapter begins with a short introduction to isosurface geometry, including curvature. It continues with a short explanation of the level-set partial differential equations. It also presents some practical details for how to solve these equations using upwind-scheme and sparse-calculation ...
