“The purpose of computing is insight—not numbers.” How many times has this quote from R. W. Hamming been used in the context of scientific visualization? Yet a steady stream of numbers, and other forms of data, continues to pour out from computations, experiments, real-time data capture, historical data capture, etc. Our ability to generate data continues to grow in leaps and bounds, and our ability to comprehend it all continues to encounter great challenges.
