Tapping into the Potential: Visual Literacy

The preceding chapter argued why visuals can be powerful artifacts in the sensemaking process and hence can address portfolio decision challenges. This chapter explores how to exploit their potential, specifically through enhancing visual literacy. This chapter discusses three areas of visual literacy and explores the relationships among them. We introduce propositions that have been tested empirically. The chapter concludes with guiding principles for the design and use of visuals for managers. These principles condense knowledge from data visualization literature and are aimed at informing project and portfolio managers about key aspects of data visualization.
