Chapter 10. Virtual Machines

The previous chapters dealt with the VMware ESX host, in contrast to virtual machines (VMs). They provided the information we needed to get to this stage—of being able to create and manipulate VMs, having an understanding of datastores, virtual networking, security, and the hardware required. Now we can build on our knowledge and add in some VMs.

Overview of Virtual Hardware

The next step in our progression is to understand what makes up a VM before we start to create them. In essence, what makes up the VM dictates what operating systems and devices the OS can access. For example, the wrong choice of SCSI adapter could make it very difficult to install or even run Windows XP.
