Improvements in VMware networking open many possibilities in ESX, and make certain network tasks much simpler than they have been in the past. This chapter covers standard VMware networking, focusing on creating and managing virtual switches. I’ll also describe how to enable IPv6 on a VMware system.

• Support for IPv6 in the Service Console and VMkernel IP stacks

• Distributed virtual switches, which can be managed centrally and picked up by every ESX host with support for private VLANs (covered in Chapter 5)
