CHAPTER 8Rapid VM Deployment
You can create quickly create a new VM in VMware vCenter merely by duplicating an existing VM, a process that uses clones and/or templates. Some more experienced users of VMware refer to this as using a “golden master,” but whatever term you choose to use—template, clone, image, or golden master—they all mean the same thing: you’ve taken an existing VM and copied it.
Templates are not a new feature, but VMware has not stood still and rested on its laurels. The developers have introduced new features that accelerate and improve an aspect of the product that is very solid, so we are now free to move our VMs around with the new OVF format, and even duplicate a VM while it is running.
