Understanding the history of language connects our past with our present. It provides specific insight fundamental to the arc of the human condition. Words express who we are and what we feel. Knowledge of word origins—our very roots—dramatically enhances Communication Mastery.
Achieve: To perform successfully. Achieve is related to chief. It comes from Old French achiever meaning “bring to an end” or literally meaning “bring to a head,” which was based on the phrase a chief meaning “to a head.” The heraldic meaning of achievement, “coat of arms,” comes from the notion that the escutcheon was granted as a reward for particular achievement.
