As I write this chapter, I'm in Kyiv, Ukraine, where I have been working for the last two months. Here in Eastern Europe, I've encountered many nongovernmental organizations or NGOs, which is the global equivalent for the term nonprofit organization used in the United States. These organizations don't use the same label, but they have much in common with U.S. nonprofits: these organizations are started by passionate people who are committed to a cause—people who, often, have little experience running a cause-based organization.
