A more cost-effective and simple way to implement shared or decentralized storage is using NAS servers. An NAS server equals a conventional server having local storage, which is distributed over the network. Most NAS products that are available on the market allow sharing storage over Network File System (NFS) and iSCSI, making them interesting for virtualization environments. VMware vSphere ESXi supports iSCSI as well as NFS for shared storage.
