Abstract

An ideal sea storm with a triangular time history of the Hs exists, which has the same wave risk as the actual storm. This is the concept of equivalent triangular storm (ETS) from which the chapter starts. Using this concept, as well as concepts of return period, persistence, and encounter probability, the chapter arrives at the “design sea state pattern,” which represents a simple way to estimate the largest wave height in the lifetime. Then the chapter gives an advanced solution for the probability that the largest wave height in the lifetime exceeds any fixed threshold, and supplies a FORTRAN program for applying this solution.
