So far we have discussed in this chapter how to extend edge server functionality using an edge server API and how to offload custom processing from the edge server using ICAP. Both of these approaches preserve the notion of an edge server as a file-caching device, be it a forward proxy or surrogate. A more radical approach of moving additional functionality into the network is to replicate an entire application including the data the application accesses.
