Tau goes back to at least 1600 BCE—Queen Hatasu’s set is on exhibit at the British Museum. In the Egyptian gallery in a case containing the throne of Queen Hatasu there is a checkers board together with its lion’s-headed pieces of light and dark wood. The Etruscan room of the British Museum also has several fine examples of onyx, porcelain, stone, and terra cotta astragals.
